World War Mob #1 (New Paradigm Studios/Comixology)

WWMob1

Rating: 4/5 – The American Mob wants Mussolini dead.
by ComicSpectrum EiC Bob Bretall.

I had originally ordered this as a print comic but I believe orders were not high enough to justify it being printed as orders for the comic via Diamond were ultimately cancelled.  Fortunately for the readers, there is a lower barrier for entry in getting a digital comic out in front of readers and New Paradigm Studios has gone direct-to-digital on this WWII tale available now on Comixology:

The story, by Vito Delsante, is fairly straightforward so far, and mostly setup/background information.  The five crime families in New York (Profaci, Gagliano, Mangano, Bonanno, Luciano) each call upon one of their enforcers currently serving in the US Army in the European theater.  They want Mussolini dead and their 5 men are tasked with figuring out how to get it done.  That’s the setup.  The interesting part of this story will be in the planning and execution of the mission, but we don’t get to that in issue #1.

The real draw for me in this series is the lush watercolor art by Giancarlo Caracuzzo.  You can see the texture of the paper and paints in the art, it’s really a visual treat.  This is a book where I’d love to see the original art in person.  The flashbacks to New York City are done in mostly monochromatic sepia that is very evocative of period photographs, while we move to full color for the present day of the story which is Europe in late 1944/early 1945.  I’d buy this series based on the art alone.

If you’re a fan of the movie Inglorious Basterds and don’t mind a WWII period piece that roams a bit off the traditional path into historical fiction, this will be right up your alley.  I’m glad this series was able to come to us via the Comixology platform, even though I’m a traditional “hold the comic in my hands” kind of guy at heart.  I hope after it’s complete that New Paradigm Studios puts out a nice hardcover collection of the series, I’d buy it in a minute.
