Rating: 4.5/5 – Great sci-fi story with stunning art. Try #1 for Free!
If you like science fiction you should check this series out, and the creators are making it easy by offering a digital download of the 1st issue for free. If that issue hooks you (like it did me) you’ll be on board for the series. Issues #1-3 are available now, #4 & 5 have been completed, and #6 (which concludes the 1st story arc) is in progress. Since they’re publishing this themselves (and offering it digitally in addition to being available to purchase in print) I’m fairly certain I’ll be able to see the entire 1st story arc. “Will they complete it?” is always a concern when committing to a self-published book, and this team really seems to have it together.
Writer J.R. Rothenberg has put together a story set on Earth that seems much like the world outside your window, except for the presence of the Fula, a secret alien race that has had tens of thousands of members living on Earth and who suddenly being a mass exodus off the planet, the impetus being a satellite designed to neutralize nuclear fallout launched by the powerful Tryum Corporation.
The art by Jason Badower is stunning. I typically expect a certain level of art from a newcomer, especially in a self-published book. Badower’s art blew me away. It’s not that it’s perfect, there are certainly little things where he can grow as an artist, that will come over time. But he has solid basics, panel-to-panel storytelling, faces/figures that ‘look right’, nice panel composition and camera angel choices to tell the story. Add in Annette Kwok’s colors and you have a really nice overall package!
The art is key in this book because the story is told mostly in human interaction and conversation (which may be off-putting to those who prefer their comics heavy on action). This is a sci-fi drama as opposed to a sci-fi summer action movie. That’s not a bad thing, I’m really loving the story and we got a story beat tying some characters and story threads together at the end of issue 3 that I can hardly wait to see play out in issue #4.
Don’t take my word for it. Go here and download #1 for free. Read it. if you like it, keep going, if not, you’re only out 10-15 minutes. Hopefully you’ll like this as much as I did, let me know if you do!
