Knuckleheads #4 (Monkeybrain/Comixology)

Knuckleheads4

Rating: 4.5/5 – Might just be one of the funniest comics out there.

I really, really enjoy this series.  It’s a superhero book that in no way takes itself seriously, but at the same time it feels real and authentic due to some great characterization, and spot on hilarious dialogue.  If you haven’t tried this series I’d encourage you to do so as Monkeybrain comics seems to be putting out great quality books, and this is one of their best.  It’s light reading fun with laugh out loud moments.

Writer Brian Winkler takes a lazy slacker, gives him powers and then has him save the world, or at least his little corner of it.  In issue four of Knuckleheads, the whole story takes place in a diner.  Without any earth shattering threats or alien invasions, Winkler chooses to place the reader next to the four main characters, letting the conversation drive your enjoyment.  The first ten pages are just that…an authentic sounding conversation that’s clever and hilarious.  Then the action comes, but it’s not superhero action, it’s everyday action that still puts character moments and humor at the forefront.  It did feel as though the issue ended a bit abruptly, but the issue is only 14 pages long (hence the $.99 price).

Robert Wilson IV’s art is a nice fit as he’s able to use some great facial expressions and clever set pieces to drive the humorous tone of the book.  For example theres a scene in the diner that cleverly uses reflection in a cup of coffee to add to the humor, and another with some hilarious graffiti written on a bathroom stall.  Wilson has a heavy line that never feels straight. It gives the overall look a slightly off feel, which sounds like it’s not a good thing, but it really is!

I do wish this book was longer.  There’s so much good with this title that it deserves more time, more pages and definitely more readers.  Let’s just hope they can put this book out consistently, and for the foreseeable future so we can get more of the first two.
